Ingredients:
Ceramic Tiles (1 per child)
1 bottle of soda (a brown soda works best)
1 bottle of lemonade
1 bottle vinegar
Water
1 plastic plate per child
Toothbrushes
Plastic Cups
Paper
Writing Instruments
Directions:
1. Give each child participating his/her own ceramic tile and plate.
2. Let them choose which solution they are going to submerge their tile in and pour it on.
3. Engage in a discussion about what we think is going to happen with each of the tiles? How will the solution change the outcome?
4. Let children draw or write their predictions on paper as they observe the start of the experiment.
5. Leave materials out overnight and revisit the next day to see the changes.
6. Observe and discuss the changes we have seen from overnight: What do the tiles look like? Feel like? Which liquid was the worst? Which was the best for the tile? How might we clean these off?
7. Let children draw and write their observations again. How does it compare to their predictions and observations yesterday?
8. Set out toothbrushes and children’s toothpaste OR baking soda for children to work on brushing the coating off the tile.
9. Review the initial predictions and observations made on day one. Were they right or did the experiment show different results?
