Materials:
Lemons
Baking Soda
Food Coloring
Dawn Dish Soap
Popsicle Sticks
Directions:
1. Cut the lemons in
half. It helps to cut the tip off one half, so that the lemon will stand
upright. Save some of the lemon halves to use for juice.
2. Add your cut lemons
inside a bowl or plastic bin. With the other halves that are not in the bin,
squeeze them and add to a separate container. Set this aside for your
experiment.
3. Use a popsicle stick
to poke holes in the upright lemons in the bin. Some juice should release for
the experiment to work.
4. Add a few drops of
food coloring. Use one color per lemon.
5. Pour Dawn Dish Soap
over the tops of each lemon.
6. Sprinkle a generous
amount of baking soda to the top of the lemons.
7. Use the popsicle
stick to press the baking soda down into the lemon so that the eruption will
take place.
8. Slowly, your lemons will erupt into a variety of colors. Continue to use the popsicle stick to mash the lemon and baking soda.
9. If desired, you can add more baking soda after the first round of eruptions to create more reactions
