How many letters
Set children up with small squares of paper, sentence strips, markers/crayons, and glue.
Invite children to write one letter from their name on each square until the have written their name.
Provide visual cues for them (a name card) so they can see what letters are in their name.
Once they have done this, count out how many squares they have. Say:
“Wow! Mallory, you have 7 squares that means you have 7 letters in your name!”
Have children glue their letter squares onto the sentence strip, count again with them.
Have them point to each square as they are counting.
Make a chart of how many letters in each child’s name (can be done small group or whole class as a follow up).
Ask:
Who has the most letters in their name here?
Who has the least?
Who has the same number of letters in their name as another peer?
